Guest writer Michael Dehoyos brings his view on NetherRealm Studios’ Innovations to NerdBastards.
NetherRealm Studios excited may disparate groups when it announced its plans for Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11), the latest installment in the now legendary fighting game. Not only does it seem that the game will appeal to hardcore fans, as well as to many of the game’s more recent converts and gaming enthusiasts, the award-winning developer is also reaching out to long-lost friends: those Kombat players who may have left the game as a nostalgic part of their past.
So with its release set for April 23rd, here is how NetherRealm Studios plans to get casual players on board with MK11:
An opportunity to compete.
Remember 1993’s flop, Super Mario Bros.? It seems Nintendo can’t seem to forget about it. The film made back less than half what was spent to make it, starting a trend for video game film adaptations that would last until 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Movies based on video games have essentially been a laughing stock in Hollywood, and few studios want to risk making them. This year may change all that. Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed both come out in theaters later this year. It seems actress and UFC fighter Ronda Rousey is eager for a Metroid movie to be made, and she wants to star in it as Samus Aran. (more…)
Ronda Rousey is passionate about many things in life. One of them obviously being mixed martial arts, a field in which she is a champion, and another is… Pokemon. Her affinity for nerd culture extends even farther, though, which she has proved on many occasions. She introduced herself in a Reddit AMA by saying, “Ronda here. My favorite Pokemon is Mew and I used to moderate a Pokemon forum. I’m an active player on WOW and a Mage named Randa on TaichiPanda – I’m on the 3rd Game Of Thrones book and will shank a bitch who tries to give shit away about the series cause you watched the show already.” She recently payed homage to her poke-obsession in a video for SportsCenter, where we see her training dressed as the one and only Pikachu. Yesterday, we posted a story about how the guys in charge at Marvel Studios do sometimes check out social media and other online postings where fans post their passionate and thought out casting suggestions for their movies, the reference in this case was specifically Captain Marvel. In the case of the super-strong, superheroine, no one’s pushed harder for the part, it seems, than Rhonda Rousey, the MMA fighter-turned-aspiring actress who recently said in a Reddit AMA that she would love to play Captain Marvel. It’s not an official casting notice, but the head of Marvel Studios says that if nothing else, he admires Rousey’s moxie. (more…)
Here comes another reboot, folks! This time around it’s the 1989 Patrick Swayze-starring action flick, Roadhouse. But, as much as Hollywood likes their reboots these days, they’ve decided to make this one a bit different. Instead of bringing on the next big dude that can kick ass and take names, they’re going with a female lead to replace Swayze’s bouncer role. And the lady of choice is none-other-than ass-kicking MMA fighter, Ronda Rousey. (more…)
A couple of weeks ago, MMA superstar Ronda Rousey revealed in an Ask-Me-Anything on Reddit that she was interested in being cast for a pretty big role in a Marvel Studios film. Being blonde, tall, strong, and capable of beating people to bloody pulps, it was little surprise that she was interested in playing Captain Marvel, who will be the subject of her own film in 2018. A lot of fans like the idea of Rousey as Marvel, she’s got the stature and the gravitas, the only question is does she have the acting chops? That may be a moot point soon as Rousey builds her CV, but one producer has heard enough, and he wants Rousey for Captain Marvel. Well, er, the porn version anyway. (more…)
Lots of celebrities are also fans. They have their dream role, and they do sometimes get a chance to use their tremendous platform to make a case for their casting. The latest person to use social media to try and strong arm casting agents is Ronda Rousey, the MMA superstar who recently said in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) that she’d like a crack at a particular Marvel superhero. “I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel,” she wrote. She meant Captain Marvel, who was promoted from Ms. Marvel a couple of years ago, and given Rousey’s stature, presence and long blonde hair, she would definitely be perfect for the part. And it seems that some artistically minded fans agree. (more…)
A movie based on Marvel Comics Captain Marvel is slated for 2018. While the flick is some years away, all anyone can talk about is just who is going to play the title character. Currently there is so many fandom campaigns for various actresses to play Miss Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers. With names like Katee Sackoff, Natalie Dormer, Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain being some of the top picks.
Now another name is being thrown into the mix. Ultimate Fighting Champion Ronda Rousey! (more…)
