Raja Gosnell is back in the director’s chair for the CG sequel The Smurfs II. This time around we see Gargamel (Hank Azaria) hatching a new plan to get that Smurf stuff he wants and needs, think “Breaking Bad Junkie” bad. He creates the Naughties, a couple of small creatures (voiced by Christina Ricci and JB Smoove) that appear to be like the Smurfs in every way besides skin color.

The Smurfs 2 hits theater screens on July 29, 2013. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays reprise their roles as the Smurfs’ human pals and protectors, while Alan CummingKaty PerryAnton YelchinFred Armisen, and George Lopez return as their respective Smurfs. Overall the casting is pretty dead on. The story line is said to be:

The evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants – and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs – Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

What in the smurf! ‘The Smurfs‘ have a movie trailer out now and it couldn’t be at a better time. When the closest thing to blue has been those freaking annoying Navi from ‘Avatar’ it’s a godsend to see these little blue wonders. I got raised on these creatures since I was more then 3 apples high and seeing them right now, even if it’s trailer, just makes a grown man giddy. Coming from Sony pictures  the film mixes live action and animation, starring a cast of human and vocal talent. The younger kids might not know what the smurfs are, but this updated CGI version takes our friends out of the forest and into the city, New York city.

Check out the trailer below:

Starring a plethora of talent it features Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays as they lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs fall from their magical world into ours with evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) on their tails.

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours — in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

The voice talent isn’t too shabby either:
Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, Fred Armisen as Brainy Smurf, Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) as Clumsy Smurf, Paul Reubens as Jokey Smurf, John Oliver as Vanity Smurf; Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson as Greedy Smurf, The Office’s B.J. Novak as Baker Smurf; and comedian Jeff Foxworthy as Handy Smurf.

As long as nobody hears a “You might be a Smurf…” joke everyone should be fine.

‘The Smurfs’ Teaser Trailer

The new Smurfs film, which will be released by Sony Animation Studio’s in 2011, just released its new teaser trailer.

Like all teaser’s, not much is revealed beyond the basic information – Namely, that SMURFS are COMING SOON.

Sadly, we don’t get to hear any dialog from the Smurfs, Gargamel (played by Hank Azaria), or Neil Patrick Harris‘ character. In fact, there is no dialog spoken by any character.

All in all, it is a fairly standard teaser that is formulaic and not very original. Just think, how many movie trailers have the music to “Wild Thing” in them?

The video can be found below, complete with an introduction to it from Neil Patrick Harris, the main human star of the film.

Hank Azaria as Gargamel (Smurfs)

If you were alive during the 80’s then you knew all about the smurfs! You might even know the studios decided to make a live action Smurfs movie based in a modern day New York City (if you didn’t know that you may have just dropped the “F” bomb).

So here is the first look at character actor Hank Azaria (Simpsons, Mad About You, Run Fat Boy Run) all decked out in this first look at Gargamel from the up and coming Smurf movie.

My two cents: I really hope this doesn’t rape me of my childlike sense of wonder like Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks did. 🙁
