Star Wars: Rogue One

Before we even sat in the theaters, we knew that there was not going to be an “opening crawl” for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We have never been without an opening crawl for a Star Wars movie before, so it was a little jarring when we actually sat down to see the new Star Wars spinoff without the iconic imagery. Lucasfilm stated that the opening crawl would only be for the “Skywalker Saga” films (Episodes 1-9) and any of the anthology films would not have the opening crawl.

This past weekend, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters. A brand new vision for the Star Wars universe showcased the Rebellion as they tried to steal the plans for the Death Star, which helped them destroy the battle station for their first decisive victory in A New Hope. The film has already made a killing at the box office ($290 million worldwide) after its first weekend and it looks to pretty much own the holiday season. Critics and fans alike seemed to enjoy the film as not only was it a great compact story that rolls into A New Hope very smoothly, but it was also loaded with great Easter Eggs for hardcore fans.

As promised by Disney, we are about to get a whole lot more of Star Wars ever since they purchased Lucasfilm from The Bearded One. Last year, the first film of a new trilogy, The Force Awakens grossed more than a billion dollars. This weekend, the first “Non-Saga” Star Wars movie, Rogue One hit theaters. Set not in the current trilogy’s timeline, but instead in the original trilogy, just a little before Luke Skywalker and the Rebels blew up the first Death Star. Rogue One focuses on a group of Rebels as they try to steal the plans to the Death Star that helped make everything that happened in A New Hope come to fruition. Some were a little weary of the film, especially after rumors of reshoots surfaced (which usually means the studio didn’t have faith in the final product). So how was the movie?

MASSIVE SPOILERS – DO NOT READ WITHOUT HAVING SEEN THE MOVIE!

It stands front and center, greeting guests to a world of imagination. While foreboding looking, its presence gets knocked down a peg thanks to its not so exciting innards. The ride inside is a boring and highly inaccurate tram ride through human’s technological history *fart noise*. Still, it’s a giant sphere. Giant spheres are cool! And it’s going to look even cooler.  On Dec 5th, just in time for Star Wars: Rogue One, the worlds largest looking golfball will be transformed in a freakin’ Death Star!  (more…)
