The third movie in the Planet of the Apes reboot continues to build a stellar cast with the announcement that Steve Zahn (Rescue Dawn, Modern Family) has been tapped to play an ape in War for the Planet of the Apes. FINALLY. We’ve been hearing about Joe Lynch‘s Knights of Badassdom for over two years now. Back in July we got our latest update, but today there’s a release date: Janurary 21st. Only a few weeks after that the film will also get a VOD release on February 11th. Check out the announcement video below. (more…)
When we first saw it, that image of Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage in full live-action-role-play garb we knew Knights of Badassdom was going to be a fun movie. Once we saw the trailer, featuring a blend of comedy, demons, and several notable TV and film stars, we were hooked and all waited for the film to be released. And we waited, and waited, the film should have been released months ago, Hell, a couple of years ago. Sadly, without a distributor, the movie sat undisturbed, gathering dust on the shelf, while fans practically begged for it to be released.
Starring Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, and Community’s Danny Pudi, Knights of Badassdom has been scheduled for release a couple of times over the past few years, although IndieVest Pictures Wade Bradley reported the movie was still in “post-production” as of September of last year. There must have been a lot of work to do as the official trailer earlier this year failed to entice or pick up any backers to distribute the comedy, further delaying the release we’ve been patiently waiting for. Finally, after several years of shopping around to potential buyers, Entertainment One, just last week, picked up the rights to distribute and release Knights of Badassdom.
No official release date has been announced since EOne picked up the film, but it’s progress of a sort. Perhaps there’s a chance, even a slim one, that we’ll actually see this reach theaters by the end of the year. Here’s the trailer and the official synopsis.
If that trailer doesn’t sway you, check out the official synopsis:
A huge group of dedicated, costumed LARP-ers (Live Action Role Players), dressed like knights, elves & various characters, give up their cell phones and take to the woods for the Central New Jersey Knights of Badassdom Adventure Society, where they are set to re-enact a dungeons and dragons scenario right out of the mythical Middle Ages. After being dumped by his sexy girlfriend Beth (Margarita Levieva), Joe (Kwanten) reluctantly decides to join Eric (Zahn) and his Larping friends (Dinklage, Pudi) in the woods rather than stay behind and feel sorry for his newly single status. There he meets hot, ass-kicking, intimidating huntress LARPer Gwen (Firefly’s Summer Glau), and finds himself a surreal adventure wilder than he ever imagined when a make-believe wizard casts an all-too-real spell from an ancient book he bought on eBay, releasing an actual demon with a taste for human blood — and souls — that starts systematically decimating the players in this suddenly deadly “game.” Will our guys become the heroes they have been pretending to be before time runs out?

The Knights of Badassdom looks to be the best flick about nerds doing nerdy things since 2008’s Fanboys. And this was one’s got Summer Glau in a short chainmail skirt kicking a lot of LARPer ass, catapulting this film into a whole ‘nother region of nerd fantasy.
The Knights of Badassdom follows a group of LARP-ers who convince a non-LARPing friend nursing a broken heart to come along in order to get his mind off his breakup. Then they accidently summon an evil, demon succubus and have to become to heroes they pretend to be. Hey, at least I doubt he’s thinking about his old girlfriend anymore.
Today at Comic-Con director Joe Lynch revealed the first trailer, and now, thanks to the film’s Facebook page, it’s on the webz for all us sorry bastards not at the con of all cons.
Doesn’t everything about this movie look fantastic!? First of all, what a amazing cast; Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanton, Summer Glau, Steve Zahn and Danny Pudi. Its like someone read my mind and created the perfect guild of awesome famous people. Plus, think how much Dinklage’s Game of Thrones, Kwanton’s True Blood, Glau’s Firefly, and Pudi’s Community fame are going to help launch this movie? It might even make LARPing cool. Or…uhh, yeah no, it won’t, who am I kidding.
In an interview with Lynch he said he made all his actors go to LARPing school to learn how to do it right, and I’m betting it will show in the film. Plus, who wants to take bets that most of those extras are LARPers themselves.
The Knights of Badassdom releases next Spring.
