Terri Hatcher

The first official image of Amy Adams as Lois Lane in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel has hit the Internet and although we did get a quick glance at Lois in the trailer, this is the first close up look at what changes might be in store for the character. Superman’s getting a make over, why not Lois?

She’s toting an Ipad around, and it’s more than just some product placement. The days of the pen and pad, even the tiny recorder are quickly dieing if not already dead. Most journalists these days work with pads, they’re easy to use, take pretty good pictures, and allow a reporter to look up things and verify facts, but is this Lois any different from past Lois Lanes? Let’s take a look.

Here’s the first woman to play Lois Lane on screen Noel Neill, shown with Clark Kent (Kirk Alyn) in this scene from SUPERMAN (Columbia, 1948). She later returned to the role of Lois Lane with George Reeves on television.

Phyllis Coates stepped in for Superman and the Mole Men (1951) which starred George Reeves as Superman and served as the pilot for the first season of Superman television show. She stayed for one season as Lois Lane and was replaced by the original, Noel Neill. One interesting note is Phyllis later returned to the world of Superman playing Ellen Lane, Lois Lane’s (Terri Hatcher) mother.

Next up is the one everyone recognizes Margot Kidder who played opposite Christopher Reeves in the Superman I through IV movies. Margot Kidder also appeared in two episodes of the television program Smallville as Dr. Bridgette Crosby, an emissary of Dr. Swann (played by Christopher Reeve). She declined to make a third appearance after Reeve’s death because she felt it would be doing his memory a disservice.

Teri Hatcher then took up the role in the ABC television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman for four seasons, starting in 1993, which featured the Lois and Superman taking their relationship to the next level and getting married.

Then came Actress Erica Durance who portrayed Lois Lane on the CW television series Smallville.

Actress Kate Bosworth played Lois Lane in the 2006 Bryan Singer directed film Superman Returns, opposite Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel.

Everyone’s got their favorite Lois, which one is yours? Margot Kidder is the one that comes to mind when Lois Lane is mentioned in conversation, but Terri Hatcher is Lois that most of my dreams are made of.

The DVD Box Set of Smallville Season Four had an interesting look at all the actresses who have played Lois Lane. The first of the video clips is below. Take a look and check out the rest on YouTube.

Anyone that watched the 90’s ABC series “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman” know who Terri Hatcher is by now (Hint: played Lois). With this being the final season of “Smallville” it’s only fitting that she be brought back into the fray as a member of the red and blue blur’s cast. She’s not going to be playing good old plucky Lois Lane however, that been covered by Erica Durrance (hot). If Terri’s not playing Lois then who will she be? Hold onto your capes folks cause she’s playing: LOIS LANE’S MOTHER!

WTF!!! how can this be? Lois Lane’s mother is dead, but the CW has that covered. Teri Hatcher will be taking part in episode 8 of “Smallville”, entitled “Abandoned”. It remains to be seen whether or not Hatcher will have contact with the present-day cast as Lois’s mother (spoiler alert) is seen on tapes discovered by Lois Lane.

Sure, Terri and Erica have a 13 year difference between them but they could each still play Lois in each incarnation. It’ll be interesting to see how all this plays out in the final season of “Smallville” this friday on the CW in the United States and on Space channel in Canada. Stay tuned for the Man of Steel.
