The Day of the Doctor

For a 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor” delivered. It had everything I wanted: multiple Doctors, a good mix of the silly and the serious, a big timeline altering story, and even a whopper of a cameo. That cameo, of course, was Tom Baker‘s astonishing return to the series he left behind in 1981. In a Happy New Year! post on his website, the actor shares his experience of coming back to Doctor Who. That was some Doctor Who anniversary special, huh? It’s hard to think that they could have done much better, but it could have been way worse. If you didn’t get the chance yet, read our recap/review courtesy of the Bastards’ resident Whospert Sarah Moran, and I think you’ll agree that despite whatever quibbles you have, “The Day of the Doctor” was very enjoyable indeed. But it did open up a can of proverbial continuity worms. For instance, how is the numbering of the various incarnations of The Doctor affected by the revelation of John Hurt‘s War Doctor? And what impact will there be going forward? Spoilers ahead, obviously. (more…)

Fifty years of Doctor Who came to an end yesterday. Fifty years of running from responsibility, from authority, from his past; The Doctor hasn’t stopped running since he stole that Type 40 TARDIS and took off. The series was cancelled after a 26 year stretch due to low ratings and production cuts, and aside from the one, singular TV movie that aired on Fox in 1996, the Time Lord was not seen in new adventures on TV screens again till 2005. As is tradition, during tonight’s Children in Need broadcast on BBC One we were treated to a sneak peek at the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.” Longer than the incredibly short clip they previewed earlier, this one gives us a bit more info about what’s happening in the 50th as well as when Doctors Ten (David Tennant) and Eleven (Matt Smith) will first meet. (more…)

As our own Sarah Moran observed this morning, if you haven’t had a chance yet to see the new Doctor Who pre-“Day of the Doctor” minisode, “Night of the Doctor” then drop what you’re doing and watch it now. Good, so now that you’ve watched it, read below to learn what mastermind¬†Steven Moffat has to say about that blast from the past, and how and why he thought it was a good idea to bring this person back to the TARDIS after all this time.
