The Eternity Clock

With the Doctor Who 50th anniversary coming up, fan-boys and other geek sub-species everywhere are hyped about what Steven Moffat has planned to celebrate.  Two major developments appear to be cresting the horizon.  The first is the rumor that the Doctor may be facing down his nemesis, the Master, during the show’s 7th season.  The other is the release of a video game featuring the Doctor and River Song as the main protagonists.  Neither development, however, appears to be as advertised.

Steven Moffat says one little thing and the media is abuzz.  He mentioned in a recent interview that he’d like to use the Master as the chief villain for the Doctor’s anniversary special and, more specifically, that he was looking towards Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to play the role.

Since then, the British tabloids and the various nameless mouths of the internet have been insisting that this casting is set in stone.  Considering that Moffat is producing both Doctor Who and Sherlock, the assumption is not completely insane, though perhaps a little hasty.

Other sources, namely Matt Smith himself, say that the rumor is just that – a rumor.  He states that he knows nothing about Cumberbatch playing opposite him as the Master [via Daybreak ].

“I know Ben and I’ve not heard anything about it. But he’s a wonderful actor and a mate. … I think he’s a bit busy being a Star Trek villain, and he’s Sherlock Holmes of course, so he’s a busy man.”

Unless Moffat is keeping him in the dark for some reason, it is probably reasonable to trust what Smith has to say.  He is, after all, the Doctor.

Still, given that the 7th season of the show just recently started shooting, you never know what might develop between here and there.  With Cumberbatch’s resume listing Sherlock, Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit among his recent roles, a foray into the world of the Doctor would be a natural progression.

Today we finally got our first look at the upcoming PS3, PS Vita and PC game, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. And while it’s exciting to see the Doctor and River running around on some new adventure, particularly one you can play a part in, it’s a little underwhelming to see how much of the game plays like a 2-D platformer. This would be fine if this were a downloadable game, but as a full release it’s disapointing.

Still, it looks like a fun game in where you’ll have the chance to play as both the Doctor and River, beingm of course, voiced by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston. Now, other have pointed out, and I’ll have to agree, that only River is seen using a gun. I don’t find that strange at all, but we don’t see the Doctor doing anything similar, meaning you might end up playin mostly as River. And I’m kinda okay with that, but then it doesn’t really fufill the promise of a DOCTOR Who video game. More like a River Song Kicks A Lot of Ass Game. Which, again, I’m okay with.
