The Last Jedi
It’s summertime! That means the kids are out of school, vacations are happening, cookouts, family reunions, and pool parties! But that also means blistering heat, sunburns, and of course being forced to interact with other human beings. What better way to combat the downsides of summer than to kick back with a snack and something cold to drink and binge watch some tv??? Netflix to the rescue! Even if the “are you still watching?” message does come across as more than a little condescending…
Social media sites are the bridges between us and the rest of the world on the internet. And like any good bridge… they each have their share of trolls. But fandoms, parts of the nerd community that should bring people together to use our nerdy powers for good, are also bringing toxic nostalgia zealots together to use their powers for evil. No other fandom encapsulates that as well as Star Wars. The vitriol around the new movies is spawning some of the worst campaigns in the history of nerddom, driving cast and crew away from social media, disrupting the hype for other movies, and causing drama and turmoil throughout the fandom. These factions dividing us are unclear to some. But is there a correct, constructive way to discuss and air our grievances with our entertainment? Should we? How are lives being affected? Who is being caught in the crossfire? How does it affect other fandoms? And how do we move forward?
Star Wars Celebration is well underway in Orlando and after an absolutely brilliant first day, which included a touching tribute to the late Carrie Fisher and the surprise appearance of both Harrison Ford and George Lucas, fans camped out (some, likely for days) for the event that everyone at Celebration has been waiting to experience: the Episode VIII: The Last Jedi panel. Director Rian Johnson was on hand to introduce the audience to some new characters to the Star Wars universe but, really, all of that, while amazing, was simply icing to the cake that Johnson kept to himself until almost the end of the panel, the first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel. Between the sad loss of Carrie Fisher throwing the future of the franchise into limbo and the mysterious title that has spawned dozens of fan theories already, the eighth Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, has been on a lot of lips recently. This is especially impressive, given it is not even due for release until the very end of the year in December, not to mention the dearth of information released about the movie. So far, almost nothing is known about it and fans are eager to see and hear more, even if it’s just a still from the set or a brief teaser. (more…)
