The Muppets… again

Muppet Sequel To “Reboot” Kermit/Piggy Wedding

Let’s face it, no one watches a Muppet flick for continuity. Even back in the Jim Henson days each film was essentially its own standalone story.

So it should come as little surprise that James Bobin is re-creating probably the most well remembered and iconic moment from the original Muppet franchise: The Muppets…Again will feature (again) the wedding of Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy.
(Since I was 7 years old I’ve wondered if this would make Piggy’s legal name “Piggy The Frog”–but I digress)

Muppet fans wil no doubt recall the wedding that capped off 1984’s The Muppets take Manhattan, but following films were…..well “unclear” as to whether or not the marriage took, and by 2011’s The Muppets, the couple’s romance seemed to be back to square one.

This info comes via/Film, who posted production designer Eve Stewart’s interview with the BBC, where she discussed her newest project:

“I’m now at Pinewood doing the Muppet show, and today has been one of the best days of my life, designing Miss Piggy’s wedding at the Tower of London…I’ve never been so happy.”

Personally, since the wedding is apparently taking place in London, I’m hoping for a couple nice call-backs to The Great Muppet Caper.

The Muppets…Again will star Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais, and is due in theatres March 21st, 2014.

2011 saw the return of everyone’s favorite colorful hand puppets in Disney’s The Muppets. The film was met with much commercial success and critical praise.

Personally, the flick left a great impact on me. It reminded me how much I loved and missed The Muppets. It was 10 years since The Muppets last cinematic outing and I kind of forgot about them. The movie totally called attention to that, and kicked me in the childhood. Kermit and friends were back, and I couldn’t have been more happy. I was left feeling like I kid again.  That, and the toe-tapping music put a smile on my face. I’ve sung “Am I Muppet or  Man” more times than I care to admit.

Point is, I have Muppet fever, and can’t wait for the sequel.

Thankfully, the wait for their next film won’t be quite too long. The Muppets… Again is on point for release sometime next year, and Disney is already teases us fans with a plot synopsis and a couple of first look images — including one of human star Ricky Gervais.

Kermit sat down for an interview with EW, in which he divulged some story details.

The idea of this film is that our gang is on this global tour, and we’re selling out these grand theaters all over Europe—in Berlin, Madrid, London—but we sort of get into a little bit of trouble when we run across my doppleganger. He’s the world’s number one criminal, Constantine, and he happens to look an awful lot like me. I won’t tell you any more than that, but let’s just say mayhem ensues.

The Muppets rejuvenated, uh, The Muppets and brought the whole gang back on the big screen in a fun and modern way pleasing longtime fans as well as newer and younger audiences. Suffice it to say, The Muppets was an all around hit and we’re hoping the already announced sequel lives up. Tentatively titled, The Muppets… again, a source told /Film the sequel, being scripted by Nicholas Stoller and James Bobin, will involve Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the gang in an European caper.

Adding to the awesome, THR is reporting Tina Fey is in talks to join the production as a Russian gulag prison guard. I love it! Right in her wheelhouse. She would be joined by other participating humans Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell. Though expect to learn of more humans involved the closer we get to its, likely, 2014 release date.

What do you think of Fey joining The Muppets‘ sequel?
