Star Wars fans lost their collective minds when it was announced at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year that non-canonical, fan favorite villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn, would be appearing in the 3rd season of Star Wars: Rebels. Back when Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, it was announced that everything outside of the 6 films, The Clone Wars TV show, and Star Wars: Rebels would not be considered canon. This effectively cast aside the countless books, comics, and video games that contributed to the Star Wars lore in the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Among those elements that didn’t survive Disney’s version of Order 66 was Thrawn, who first appeared in Heir to the Empire written by Timothy Zahn. (more…)
When Disney bought Lucasfilm, there were aftershocks felt throughout the Star Wars fandom. One of the biggest was when Disney declared the Expanded Star Wars Universe material, all the books and games written between the time of the original films and the prequels, to be non-canon. Naming everything that came under that banner as Star Wars Legends. All those stories and characters, beloved by many fans and an important part of fans lives between the drought of time between the movie trilogies were stripped away. When discussing Star Wars, it’s easy to forget that some people have only seen the original film trilogy and perhaps the prequels. Thus, when you get on a tangent and start spouting off to your friends about Han’s abandonment of his son and his shunning of Leia after the Yuuzhan Vong’s actions resulted in Chewbacca’s death, people will look at you funny.
