Toy Fair

If you’ve been following our Twitter account today, then you are already well aware that the 2016 Toy Fair is underway at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. The plaything equivalent of the Super Bowl, Toy Fair is the place where deals are made, swag is swug, and the public is introduced to what products will be the hits (and, in far too many cases, the misses) of the coming year. For the third year in a row, we sent writer Chris Cummins to check out the festivities and report back on his findings. Focusing on action figures and other collectibles, he discovered an array of products that will have you salivating and your wallet hurting. Here’s his take on the event’s most notable finds.

A Requiem For New York Toy Fair 2015

Screen Shot 2015-02-17 at 2.18.34 AM

The 2015 North America Toy Fair is winding down, but as it slowly marches into the history books kids and toy collectors alike have a lot to look forward to.

We were fortunate enough to attend the event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center — the massive hall which also hosts the annual New York Comic Con — and we were wowed by the sheer enormity of it all. (Superhero pet uniforms are the new Lego knockoffs, discuss). So just as we did last year, Nerd Bastards presents a look back at the best products, most notable happenings and general greatness/weirdness from Toy Fair. Let’s take a look:

Spawn-Movie

It’s time for our semi-annual update on what’s up with the Spawn reboot movie, that magical time when Todd McFarlane let’s us know that he’s still toiling away on his pet project. To recap: Spawn movie released in 1997. It bombed. McFarlane wanted sequel. No one else did. He gets rights back. Promises low budget reboot. Keeps promising. Promising…

So here we are again. While hocking his wares at the TIA Toy Fair this week, McFarlane talked to MTV about progress on the Spawn movie front.

“I continue to write a page here and there. As I’ve said before, I’ve got a guy waiting on the sidelines who’s an Academy Award-winning actor who phones every three weeks going ‘Todd, where’s the script? Where’s the script?’… He came out to the office, he gave me his pitch, I gave him my pitch, and he’s like ‘Fine, let’s do your gig.’ The pitch I gave him was that we could then do, like, ten of these for the next ten years, and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.

“The plan would be to do the movie, bring the movie out and then go back on TV with the animation like we did the first time. But the cool thing with the animation is we’ve got 90 minutes all set, ready to go, other than just sending it to an animation house. We’ve done all the voice recordings, we’ve done all the backgrounds and everything. So the technology is way better than it was a decade ago. and there’s some spectacular stuff that we can now do when we bring it back that we were never able to do on HBO.”

So if the race of the character holds –  African-American – that means we have a very small pool of Oscar-winning actors to draw from: Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Louis Gossett, Jr., Cuba Gooding, Jr. or Morgan Freeman.

By process of elimination, I think Washington, Whitaker, Gossett and Freeman might be out for running for ageist reasons, but perhaps there’s more compelling and direct evidence about what choice has already been made:

Todd-McFarlane-Jamie-Foxx-Spawn

So is Jamie Foxx going to suit up as Spawn? Well, as evidenced by the above photo, Foxx and McFarlane have met a few times. Or maybe McFarlane just surprised him with a sketch when they ran into each other at the comic book store. Still, attaching a star like Foxx would secure some studio interest for a new Spawn film, if only McFarlane would stop being so cryptic. Also, maybe if he wrote more than a couple of pages every once and a while…

Oh well.

What do you think, Bastards? Interested in seeing Jamie Foxx as Spawn?

Nerd action figure enthusiasts, like myself, are privileged to buy just about every pop culture character that ever was/is. Seriously, pretty much every iconic character from film, TV, video games and more have spawned little plastic figures honoring their image. I’m not complaining. No, I’m thrilled! I am, though, running out of shelf space. That, and my wallet and fiancee are not so understanding.

Money, storage and g/f problems be damned, because, thanks to the New York International Toy Fair (which happened this weekend), 2013  is looking like another killer year for plastics.

Toy Fair 2013 showcased all types of toys to choose from, classic toys from yesteryear, new movie tie-in toys, and toys for all ages, brought forth from the wacky minds of the toy masters at Mattel, Lego, Hasbro and many, many more. These are the products that will be hitting store shelves everywhere all year long that may flop, or become the hottest must have toy for Christmas.

Thanks to internet leaks, and work from other bloggers, we’ve rounded up the biggest and the best.

Take a stroll through the New York Toy Fair courtesy of NerdBastards “Gallery of Toys” and get your second hand look at NECA‘s Kick-Ass 2, and Lone Ranger line. Hasbro’s Star Wars, G.I. Joe:  Retaliation and Transformers, Marvel Legends/Avengers figures. Mattel‘s Masters of the Universe, DC Unlimited, Classics TV Batman, and Watchmen collections. DC Collectibles Man of Steel and, much, much more!

Check out the massive (90) picture gallery below and let your fellow NerdBastards know which are keepers and which will clutter store shelves until their thrown into the 50% off bin in the comments section below.

Toy Fair 2013 – an insider/industry toy convention – is going on right now in New York. Loads of pictures and updates of upcoming toys and collectibles will be making their way around the net. Nerd Bastards will post what we can when we can.

One line of toys that has been getting some buzz, is from Warner Bros. and Zach Snyder’s Super Man reboot Man of Steel

Mattel will be creating a line of toys for the film in their Movie Masters collection, and they have debuted Superman, Zod, and Jor-El. Now, they have given our friends over at MTV Geek the first look at Kryptonian villainess Faora. I wouldn’t categorize this Superman toy as a spoiler, but this is the first time we’ve gotten to see what director Zack Snyder’s iteration of the character (played by Antje Traue) looks like. Check her out below:

ManofSteel_MovieMasters-Faora_mtvgeek1

Faora is Zod’s (you will kneel before him!) right hand goon, and, based on her outfit, she’s a part time BDSM sex slave/mistress.

I’ve never said this about an action figure before, but she’s got purrty lips.

The figure its self will be on sale in June for $14.99. You can see Man Of Steel when it hit theaters June 14th of this year.

New York Toy Fair 2012 has come and gone. While we thought we featured everything in our NYTF: Toy, Toys and Oh Yeah, More Toys  post, news is still coming out of the “Big Apple”.  Hasbro has announced it’s line figurines, collectible items and game pieces for their upcoming Star Wars line. They presented a plethora of plastic fun things, which are representative of the original trilogy, prequel trilogy and the expanded universe. In other words, more Star Wars shit we can’t help but buy. As much as I hate putting more money in George Lucas’ pocket, I must own that Darth Star display with all the wee little figures (above).

Check out the full gallery of images (with shots supplied by Pietro Filipponi) and descriptions after the jump.

Hey, it’s Star Wars. “Shut up and take my money”, right?

The-Walking-Dead-Cast-Photo

Every year people gather at the prestigious New York Toy Fair (they take toy presentation serious), a cornucopia of plastic and the latest tech, for the upcoming figures and collectibles of the year. With things like ‘Twilight’ storming shelves last year its a miracle that kids aren’t asking for a Cullen for Christmas. Thankfully it’s a new year, a new year means new favorites and this year it’s flesh eating undead Zombies. First; they were in the comics, then they shuffled into the brains of television viewers and with a second season in the works it means… a toy line.

A Zombie in every household, a brain out of every child

At this years ‘Toy Fair 2011’ it was announced that a series of action figures based on the AMC hit series ‘The Walking Dead’ from superstar toy company McFarlane Toys will be rolling out. The figures will be split into a two series deal split between a September and November release of this year. Figures will be based on both the comic by Robert Kirkman and the AMC series of the same name.

See what’s in “store’ after the jump
