*Note: I only posted this so I could rant about cartoons. Feel free to skip my tirade and watch the promo for Green Lantern: The Animated Series below .

I think for the most part, the cartoons of today fail in comparison to those of the 80’s and 90’s. The animation is better today, but all the shows are way too safe and offer nothing beyond a 3 year old intelligent level. There’s no complexities. Shows now are just a bunch of noise in color and character. The intro theme songs, the voice acting and anime influences all suck in comparison. Lord, how I miss the days of Voltron, G.I. Joe: Real American Heroes, Batman the animated series and so on. I dunno, maybe I’m just biased. Maybe I’m that curmudgeony old bastard who shakes his fist and says “I remember when…”

With that said it’s hard for me to get excited about any upcoming animated shows. It’s all derivative. Same shit, different characters. I’d like to be thrilled for DC and WB’s upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series, but it just feels like it’s cut from the same mold as everything else. At least the animation does anyway. Check it out in the 7 second teaser promo trailer:

The show is being produced by Bruce Timm, and it will be a part of Cartoon Network’s original programming. The series features the voice of Josh Keaton as Hal Jordan. Other characters that have been confirmed included Kilowog, the Guardians of the Universe, Carol Ferris, Salaak, Sayd, Saint Walker, and Zilius Zox. The main antagonists of the show will be the Red Lantern Corps, led by the villain Atrocitus, and the Manhunters.  Reading all that, I might be inclined to swat away my initial negative reaction and actually say this looks like it will be a fun series.

The show is set to premiere at the end of 2011 after the movie has been released. The first season of the show will have 26 episodes.
