Batman V Superman is soon going to hit theaters, heralding the greatest DC Movie Universe crossover ever. While superhero nerds across the world wait for the Brave And the Bold to make their very first cinematic debut, it’s important to remember about the JLA movie that never was, the brain-child of Mad Max‘s daddy, George Miller…

Titled Justice League: Mortal and almost scheduled to begin development in the wayback days of 2009, George Miller‘s version of the League would go up against wealthy industrialist (and all-around douchebag) Maxwell Lord and DC‘s cosmic HAL 9000-equivalent, Brother Eye. Judging by the choice of antagonists, we are tentatively guessing that Mortal would criticize the military-industrial complex, which probably didn’t make for a great first pitch.

Among the many reasons behind the film’s ultimate fate, George Miller recounts the Writer’s Strike, his personal conflict with the studio regarding the exact location of the movie’s shooting and more (we are guessing a lot of those were budgetary issues). However, in a recent interview, Miller revealed another reason behind the film’s cancellation:

“I really was attracted to it. But there was a writers’ strike looming. We had to cast it very quickly, which we did with Warner‘s casting people. And we cast it really quickly and we mounted it very quickly. And it depended on a start date and it depended on some basic rebate legislation that had just got through a new Australian government. But it was just too big a decision for them to make in the time. And that fell through and the whole film fell through. We almost got there. And it wasn’t to be. But that happens a lot, where films line up and the stars look like they’re aligning and they didn’t.”

So hasty casting choices and a lot of red tape were but a few more of the reasons piled up behind the movie’s cancellation, adding to the scores of troubles that the crossover film would obviously be facing. However, we will not know more about the scope and premise of the film, at least until the Justice League: Mortal documentary airs (Warner Bros willing) sometime this year.
