Many of you might only know The Witcher from the wildly successful video game series, but Andrzej Sapkowski‘s book series that the game was based on are even more popular. The series has been translated into 20 different languages and sold around the world. Netflix is hoping to capitalize on that existing market by bringing the book series to television in a new The Witcher Netflix series.

There are differences between the books and the video game series and the new Netflix show should stick more towards the books than the video game. Sapkowski won’t be making the same mistakes he made when he sold the video game rights to CD Projekt Red. Sapkowski was offered a cut of the game’s future profits, but he declined saying:

Give me all my money right now.

Not the best deal for the author when the game went on to record sales levels. This time around he should be in a much better place to profit from the Netflix series if it is a hit. Netflix has already stated that the series will lean on the books and use Sapkowski as a creative consultant.

Sapkowski, had to say about the new series:

I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.

I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.

That is something to look forward to!

Executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (The Expanse), said:

The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.

As news of casting, production, and when the series will air becomes available, we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
