Although the first season ended to a mixed reaction, striking a chord somewhere between madcap oddity and underwhelming wheel spinning, it did at least leave us where Preacher Is meant to be. Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy are on the road, God is missing and the Saint of Killers is hot on their trail, leaving a bloody mess of corpses in his wake. For fans of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comics that means that the scene is now set, and it’s time for Preacher to start doing what it does best; delivering high-octane insanity, irreverent religious satire, vampires, guns, bizarre sexual fetishes and everything in-between. From the teaser that just dropped, it looks like that’s the plan.

It feels very appropriately Preacher-esque to set a montage of cartoonish ultra-violence to a song that is most commonly shuffled to by pensioners at family weddings. Dexy’s Midnight Runners provide the backing track to a teaser that is heavy on explosions, not so much on plot detail. We see Arseface in what looks like prison, The saint of Killers is back, and an entire town’s worth of angry, gun-toting mob look set to make an appearance. Also, there’s a guy in a rather fetching Dalmatian costume being led by his mistress on a lead, because why not?

The official synopsis states that season two will be a: “genre-bending thrill ride that follows West Texas preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip (Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga) and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) as they embark on a road trip to find God and are thrust into a twisted battle spanning Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between.”

As to fan theories about which beloved characters might be making an appearance; executive producer/co-creator Sam Catlin said the show will continue Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish)’s hunt for Jesse, but there’s also going to be a new hunter joining the fray: “the figure in white, and fanboys will know who that is. They’ve already seen the character briefly.”

It’s fair to say then that the primary antagonists of the series are likely to be the Grail, the shadowy organisation behind organised Christianity, devoted to maintaining the bloodline of Jesus Christ in time for the second coming. We see what looks like a truckload of their soldiers facing off with Jesse in the teaser. Herr Starr, the white-suited Grail operative who desperately wants Jesse’s power of Genesis, has been teased in season 1. It seems almost certain that he’ll turn up in season 2, most likely as the season’s main villain. He brings an odd mix of danger and comic relief to the story, as almost every encounter he has with Jesse leaves him minus an appendage. We can’t wait to see what the scriptwriters have in mind for him.

Season 1 delivered the goods in terms of violence and hilarity but got bogged down with plotlines that never went anywhere and kept us stuck in a town when Preacher lives on the open road. The decision to blow the whole thing up at the end of Season 1 was probably a wise one.  Season 1 is a decent prequel, what we expect now is is a Preacher that matches the scope and ambition of Garth Ennis’ vision, while keeping its tongue constantly its cheek.
