Right now J.J. Abrams is out and about promoting Super 8, opening this Friday, but everybody’s asking him about something else, “When’s the next Star Trek being released? Will it be in 3D?” Oh, we predictable fans. Super 8 might end up being the sci-fi, smash hit of the summer but it doesn’t moisten every fanboys’ panties like the next voyage of the starship, Enterprise.

So what does J.J. have to say about a Star Trek sequel? The good, hard-working, (obsessive?) folks over at TrekMovie have compiled a handful of quotes from Abrams’ press tour. Regarding the previously announced release date, June 29, 2012, now only a year away,

I care much more that it be good than it be ready. I’m, obviously doing everything I can to make sure that schedules don’t get screwed up. But I don’t think anyone wants a movie on time that’s not worth your time. We want to make sure it’s done right. The guys I’ve been working with are obviously brilliant so I’m really excited to get back into it.

I hear ya, J.J. We all want another Star Trek, but we want another good Star Trek. Let’s not restart the pattern of good Trek movie, bad Trek movie which plagued the earlier films.

Will it be shot in 3D?

I’m not yet considering [3D], but you know, I haven’t gotten any phone call from people in suits. I know what’s good for me.

If they call, just — say — no. You can do it J.J., you can stand up to those suits. You’re J.J. Abrams, creator of Lost and you’ve amassed them lots of money. They’ll listen. (Hopefully.)

Once Super 8 releases and we’ve all shit ourselves over it’s awesomeness I’m sure we’ll hear more about Star Trek, so stay tuned. In the meantime, did you ask if there’s any Trekkie bits in Super 8? Of course you did, why don’t you hit the jump.

Here’s a little cameo spoiler for you,

There are a couple of [Easter eggs] here and  there. I will say that Leonard Nimoy is in the movie, if you can find him.

Okay, when you see Super 8 this weekend bring your Nimoy-spying glasses. Available at a retailer near you.
