Will a Live-Action X-Men Be Coming to Fox?

It’s a basic fact of the super hero genre – properties converted from comic books inherently function better when they’re turned into television series rather than movies. Comic books are, after all, episodic in their nature. So 22 episodes worth of story arc is just about right to tell a proper tale. Now, it looks like one franchise that has seen success on the big screen may be making a move to television, for Fox is trying to seal the deal on the rights to make a live-action X-Men series.

According to one of Fox’s CEOs, Dana Walden:

[For] X-Men, we’re in negotiations with Marvel. We’re hopeful we’ll be able to announce something soon. We’re not closed on a deal yet but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing.

The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side so we won’t be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney. This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox.

Unfortunately, there’s one small hurdle. While 20th Century Fox owns the rights to use the X-Men in their big-screen productions, any further adaptations will have to be approved by the Mouse Overlord over at Disney. Disney owns Marvel Entertainment, which means they own the X-Men television rights. And those rights could mean a giant pile of money to whoever manages to exploit them.

The one saving grace of all this may be the fact that Disney simply has a too much on its plate. They have the rights to all the Marvel Studios movies being made as well as the Star Wars franchise, which is plenty enough to tackle. So making some quick cash by selling those rights to Fox may be the best course of action. With any luck, we’ll see an entire host of X-Men making their way across the small screen and finally get a chance to witness epic battles between some of our favorite super-powered beings who have failed to make the big-screen cut.

We here at Nerd Bastards will let you know when we discover more. Until then, commence to debating whether Fox deserves the rights and whether an X-Men TV series is just going to turn into a giant disaster. Or worse yet, get cancelled before it even makes it through the first season.
