Will Smith and son Jaden have been looking for another movie since the success of the feel good story The Pursuit of Happyness. The Smith boys have found it in One Thousand A.E. (After Exodus). The story premise is that mankind has abandoned the Earth for the stars and 1,000 years later a father and son crash land their space ship on a very different, dangerous, planet Earth. Maybe they’ll run into talking apes, or zombie hordes, or apocalyptic tribes of cannibals called Yangs and Coms (NerdBastard point for anyone that can name where that last one came from).

It could be all those things because none other than M. Night Shyamalan is going to direct. That’s right, the master of the “Big Twist” is in charge. Straight from his train wreck The Last Airbender, M. Night is going to take the reins of this Scifi thriller. I think this is not as bad a fit as one would expect. M. Night needs some reputation rebuilding and Will Smith wants lots of control on the set. The pairing of the two meets both those needs.

Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures said:

Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story and we couldn’t be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid. We’re thrilled to have the two of them together on this project.

Shyamalan also added to the mix with this unicorns and glitter comment

The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project.

The chance to make a movie that people will go see and maybe not try to spit on M. Night when leaving is too good an oppurtunity to pass up. Will Smith was originally on this film only as a producer and not playing the on-screen father. That obviously changed, most likely in a move to forward the production and satisfy the Hollywood executives nervous with M. Night Shaymalan’s last couple of movies. Smith will still produce, though, along with several other people under his company, Overbrook Entertainment.

What do you think? What kind of twist will Shyamalan throw at us?
