I was looking through some files earlier today and found this bit of news listed under “Awesome.” When the old guard from the first ‘Star Wars’ trilogy was enlisted to return for ‘Episode 7: The Force Awakens,’ nobody mentioned Billy Dee Williams. Principal shooting began; Harrison Ford lost a fight with a door; Mark Hamill rocked a dope Jedi beard; some people saw a black Storm Trooper and called the cops; and talk of a SW theme park drew buzz. 2014 was the year of Star Wars chatter, but there was little to no talk of why BDW hadn’t joined the cast. It makes me wonder why this issue wasn’t addressed earlier. But we’ve the scoop on his hopeful return in Episode 8.

Original cast members Williams and Ford attend a screening commemorating "Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back" in Hollywood

Who wants to see the boys back in town? The 77 year-old smooth talking Williams is game for bringing back the coolest guy in the universe. Hell, he wanted to return for the new film, but it didn’t happen. Only real insiders know why.

Either way, I’m not pushing too hard on this. I don’t care when we get him, as long as we get him – and I’m not talking about some CGI cartoon either. In a sit-down with Cinelinx, Lando himself spoke about a future appearance.

“Yeah, people were pretty upset about it [his not appearing in Ep 7.] But I uh…I may very well…I have a feeling I’m going to show up. There’s nothing I can really discuss about it at this stage. People think of me as the original cast, but I didn’t come in until the second movie. I did Empire and then I did Return of the Jedi, but I came in after everyone else was introduced…So I think they’re probably proceeding in that way.”

Obviously dude still wants in. And not just in a “pay me, I need a job” sort of way. He totally understands his importance to the franchise and the fans. At least, that’s what I gleaned from different articles on the subject. Anyway, cape!

I understand his take on it though. He could be re-introduced to audiences in much the same way we met him the first time: via the second movie of the trilogy. Of course there was no response from director J.J. Abrams, nor any other members of the cast just yet. But, the way I see it, Lando shot first, so maybe we’ll get some useful comments from key figures sooner than later.
