By the looks of things Sony Pictures want to make a movie adaptation of the hit video game Uncharted with some scope and proper character development. They have hired Mark Boal, who has written scripts for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, with the latter bagging him an Oscar. Previously Sony had the writer of the National Treasure movies, so it’s a step in the right direction and who knows, maybe this might actually be good, if they can find a leading protagonist who is willing to sign on the dotted line  (Chris Pratt was offered the role but he turned it down). Boal is a huge fan of the Uncharted franchise according to THR, and he is thinking of this franchise being similar in style to Indiana Jones; a swashbuckling adventure (hold on, …why did they sack the National Treasure dude?). Well, to be fair, that’s basically the premise of the game, having Nathan Drake chasing around for old artifacts. Maybe if Boal creates a decent story-arc and develops the character of Nathan Drake (the main protagonist), then there could be some substance and the movie could be something that fans and non-fans will sit through and enjoy.

Sony are looking at beginning production in 2015, so that is plenty of time for Boal to hack into the script and make it his own. As mentioned above, the game is based on Nate Drake – a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake – who believes he knows the location of the legendary golden South American city of El Dorado from a cursed statue. Not only does Drake bump into a treasure-seeking rivals when he arrives in El Dorado, there are also demented creatures, mutated descendants of Spaniards, and last but not least, a bunch of Nazi’s.

Chris Pratt would have been a good choice, but he has Jurassic Park coming out, so perhaps he has chosen the sensible option as to avoid being typecast. Mark Wahlberg was attached to the film at one point (…man this guy is everywhere, and he’s starting to become pretty annoying) so thankfully he passed. Wahlberg and director John Moore – the guy who made that crapfest Die Hard 5  – have already ruined one potential game-come-film franchise with the terrible Max Payne, so yeah, you get the point. Apparently the development is moving forward, but without a main protagonist, they are pretty much in limbo for the time being. However, it does seem like the kind of movie that Dwayne Johnson could ruin, or perhaps Nicky Cage can take the role out for a spin – after all he’ll take on any part he’s offered and he was OK in National Treasure.

Boal has also teamed up with director Kathryn Bigelow again and penning the film Triple Frontier. The story is about Bowe Bergdahl, a controversial Army soldier, who was imprisoned by the Taliban and was traded and freed for prisoners that were held in Guantanamo Bay. It was laso rumored that Kathryn Bigelow was going to be taking on directorial duties on Wonder Woman, but it appears that is not the case anymore.
